LOSING GROUND – Worldwide threats to nature from oil and gas extraction

SPECIAL ENVOY: “Good day, Ladies and Gentlemen,

“Yesterday I talked about a massive threat from the oil and gas industry to Dugongs and other threatened and vulnerable species here in the UAE, in our immediate vicinity.

“But such threats from oil and gas extraction do not just exist here. Together with our partners Earth-Insight, IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas, and LINGO, we investigated the situation around the globe.

“The scientists doing this research found over 900 Protected Areas in which oil and gas drilling is going on, and the reserves below them amount together to as much potential CO2 emissions as the whole world emitted last year!

“Now, the authors are scientists. And we do have the exact numbers… but they are still embargoed. Until this afternoon, when we hold a press conference at half past four to inform the media about our findings. We will also launch the full report on what we found.

“But it’s clear: the oil and gas industry knows no limits and has no shame. All over the world, they churn the earth and spoil the sea to extract even the last drop of oil and whiff of gas, to the detriment of nature and of the climate.

“Ladies and Gentlemen, this must stop! We need to phase out fossil fuels as quickly as possible. If you are from the media, please join us at our press conference this afternoon.

“Thank you. And as always, I ask you to sign up and become a FRIEND OF THE DUGONGS. Access the website through this QR code. Or through the LEAVE IT IN THE GROUND website.
